Natural Dyeing and Painting with Plant Pigments

Interested in ways to recycle liquid from your natural dye bath to continue creating? New to natural dyeing and pigment making? All levels of experience are welcome! In this hands-on, one day outdoor workshop at the Naturalist’s Notebook, learn the process of creating handmade paint using plant pigments from exhausted natural dye baths with Katama Murray of Teach Peace Prints. Create beautiful, one of a kind pieces that can be admired forever, while taking time to slow down and appreciate the richness and diversity of color dwelling alongside us. Exploring the Magic of Natural Color: Introduction to Eco Printing with Katama Murray of Teach Peace Prints

Hidden color exists all around us, waiting to be transformed into works of art. Have you ever wondered how to utilize local plant species and food compost in a sustainable, creative way? In this hands-on, one day workshop at The Naturalist’s Notebook, dive into the realm of natural printmaking and dyeing processes with Katama Murray of Teach Peace Prints.

Participants will develop a basic understanding of sustainable foraging, bundling and fabric preparation techniques, as well as ways in which we as stewards of the earth can bring plant spirits to life in the form of cloth and fiber. The process of mordanting will be covered briefly, and further details will be printed and sent home with you. Participants will spend the remainder of the workshop creating four eco printed pieces, including a bandana, a tote, and cotton and linen patching material. This meditative process yields different results each time, and is a great opportunity to let go while collaborating with nature.
